Computer-numerical control (CNC) machining is highly important in the manufacturing industry. Equipment such as shaping machines, routers and center lathes are used during the process. This method plays a big role in improving the production capacity. It is perfect as it helps to produce items in large quantities. The process is complex to be properly executed by a layman and so, should be executed by professional CNC machinists.

Aaron Machine Shop Ltd. has been providing clients with quality services and quick turnaround times since 1996. In this blog post, let’s discuss the importance of the CNC machining process.

What Is CNC Machining?

It is a manufacturing process where pre-programmed computer software controls the movement of machinery and factory tools. This process enables you to execute three-dimensional cutting tasks in a single set of prompts. It is suitable for various kinds of materials, including plastic, metal, glass, wood and foam.

CNC machining is about transforming a piece of material into a finished product through a controlled material removal process. Similar to other prototype development technologies, CNC machining relies on digital instructions from a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) or a Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM). The process has various applications and advantages, especially in enhancing the efficiency of the products.

However, CNC machining process can’t be carried without CNC machinists. They are technicians with expertise in the operation of CNC technology. They are entrusted with several responsibilities that need skill, precision and knowledge. As it is a technical job, it requires proper education and training. A few of the job responsibilities of a CNC machinist include:

  • Interpreting the design of the parts incorporating technical briefs when CNC machines are programmed
  • Selecting suitable tools required to execute the product orders
  • Choosing optimum cutting speeds
  • Performing regular maintenance on CNC machines
  • Monitoring whether the work is up to technical standards

Types of CNC Machines

The most frequently used CNC machines are:

• Lathes – They are the inverse of drills and spin against the drill bit. Our lathes include:

Ø  Mazak QTN 350 Lathe

–          Max turning diameter: 16” x 48” long

Ø  Haas SL-10 Lathe

–          Max turning diameter: 6” x 14” long

Ø  Mazak QTN 250 Lathe

–          Max turning diameter: 12” x 22” long

Ø  Haas SL-20 Lathe

–          Max turning diameter: 8.5” x 22” long

• Milling machines – They make use of rotary cutting tools to remove materials from the stock unit. Our milling machines include:

Ø  Mazak VTC-200C Milling Centre

–          Table size: 60” x 20” x 25”

Weight capacity: 2200 lbs

Ø  Mazak Nexus VCN-510 Milling Centre

–          Table size: 51” x 20” x 20”

Weight capacity: 2600 lbs

Water Jet Tables – They make use of water alone to cut soft materials such as rubber and wood. Our water jet tables include:

Ø  Omax® 55100 Water Jet Table

–          Max material size: 55” x 100” x 5”

Ø  Omax® 60120 Water Jet Table

–            Max material size: 60” x 120” x 5”
